The official definition of a sex worker is someone who works in the sex industry and was first coined in 1980 by Carol Leigh, a sex worker activist. A sex worker includes anyone who engages in sexually explicit physical contact with another person for money. This would mean that a prostitute, escort or dominatrix falls into the category of a sex worker. Other sex workers include porn actors and models, web cam models, strippers, and performers in live sex shows. All of those occupations fall into the area of sex workers. Now, women who are paid to provide sexual fantasies that lead to sexual gratification over the telephone is a Phone Sex Operator, and, therefore, considered to be a sex worker. That's really not a great term, though, is it? It seems to take away a bit of the mystique and attraction of it all.

So you need to remember that even though a "label" has been attached to phone sex, that does not mean that the women who do it are not having a great time. These women LOVE what they do and would never do anything else even if they had the chance! They aren't ashamed or embarrassed about their line of work. Yes, it IS a job, but it is so much more as well. You will rarely find a Phone Sex Operator who considers what she does to be "work." So it's unfortunate that the term "sex workers" has been applied to them. While they technically ARE sex workers, on a more personal level, they are anything BUT "workers."
